Hello 1996!

Before I begin, a big thanks to Tyler Becker for the inspiration for this post ... and my favorite #1800ballers for the long throwback conversation we had at lunch on Tuesday.

This week, Nickelodeon has listened to its dedicated 20-something year old fans and brought back 90's Nick starting at midnight. This includes Keenan and Kel (who loves orange soda?), Doug (and PorkChop, too), All That (Pierre Escargot!) and a variety of others.

While I am more than ecstatic about this comeback, I can't help but think of a million other things I'd love to see be resurrected in 2011. These include...

N Sync: After seeing Backstreet Boys perform last summer in Atlantic City, my best friend and I have been anxious for N Sync to throw a reunion tour. We already promised each other we would be willing spend hundreds on front row tickets and travel to wherever necessary to see them live. Our 10 year old selves will thank us..and it will be a tale to tell the kids one day!

Milky Pens/ Gel Pens: Remember when it was cool to write all over yourself and your friends? Why isn't it cool anymore? Lets bring back the brightly colored, pastel colored, and glitter colored pens to draw hearts and peace signs all over eachother's hands and arms during social studies class. Who's with me?!

Mad Libs: Hours and hours of fun could be had with this $5 fill in the blank word game. For some reason, I remember using the word "umbrella" 95% of the time when they asked for a 'noun' (I guess I thought it was a funny word). Can you imagine playing now as a legal adult? Oh the words I can imagine my friends using now....

Skip Its: "But the very best thing of all, there's a counter on this ball!" .. Come on, I know you all remember the jingle! I broke an average of 5 skip-its a summer yet continually wasted my mom's money on replacing them. Something about strapping a ball to one ankle and jumping over it with the other was just the coolest thing for me in the 90s. I want someone to re-invent and modernize the skip-it so that 1) the counter would actually work 2) the ball wouldn't break off and 3)it played some sort of bad ass music to skip to. Any inventors up there up for this challenge?

Tamagotchis: No explanation necessary. They are "phat".

Are you excited about the 90s Nick TV making a comeback? What other 90's things do you wish you could see today? Comment below!

The New Age of Reading

Recently, I finished The Hunger Games trilogy and it took a lot longer than expected. Because it takes me a week TOPS to finish a book, I never like buying them - besides my bookshelf is overflowing with books that I haven't touched more than once. So instead, I take advantage of the public library. I was on the waiting list for the second book in the series for about 3 weeks and couldn't read the third one without reading the second first. I was annoyed. I seriously considering investing in a kindle or a nook so I wouldn't have the hassle of waiting for another book again. I made a mini pro/con list in my head...

Kindles and nooks are great, lightweight, come with snazzy covers, and have thousands of books to download with the click of a keyboard. They seem great..except that it's just like reading on a computer screen. I don't know about you guys, but my eyes get so extremely tired spending hours looking at a screen. I much prefer reading print. I also love the feeling of a printed book in my hands. The yellowing pages, although gross and something smelly, are almost magical in a way. Hundreds of people could have held that same book you are now reading and each person took something different away from the words on the pages. So although a kindle/nook is your own personal portable library, you almost lose the magic of the printed word.

As of right now, I'll be sticking with my Brooklyn Public Library card..but I can't imagine libraries existing 20 years from now.

What are your thoughts on Kindles and Nooks? Do you own one? Do you prefer them to 'old fashioned' hard/soft cover books? Would love some feedback!

Why I Don't Have a Smart Phone

I am a bit ashamed to admit that I am one of three people in my office without a smart phone. I know, it's the 21st century and my flaming blue slide-out keyboard sprint LG rumor 2 is no longer "cool". I know one day I will make the switch to a hip, 4G smart phone, but until now I'm sticking with my "oldschool" phone. And here are my top 3 reasons why:

1. Sprint does not make the iPhone. If I'm going to join the rest of society, I refuse to do it with a blackberry. I am a hardcore Mac cult member with an iPad, iPod, and MacBook. The iPhone is literally screaming my name. Unfortunatley, I am on my family plan on the Sprint network and Sprint does not make the iPhone. And because I am not making a set salary and have no money to support a data plan or even my own monthly bill, it is impossible for me to break away from my family plan that my mom so kindly pays for.

2. As a BuzzBuilder at Likeable Media, I am glued to my computer screen all day long - constantly checking client's facebook posts and @replys on twitter. When I finally pack my computer away, the last thing I want to do is be anywhere near social media. I want time to relax, read, listen to music, watch TV, cook, work out...anything but be on facebook and twitter. And with a smart phone, I would literally be connected 24/7 .. and I know I would be too distracted to do other things..so for my own benefit it's best I don't get one right now.

3. Finally, I get extremely annoyed when me and a friend are out to dinner or hanging out together and I'm trying to have a conversation with them and they ignore me because they have a notification. When you're alone or on a train and have nothing better to do but obsessively check your phone every 30 seconds - fine. But when you're in a social situation and the other person is mid-story and you stop and go "Sorry, one second" and flip through 27 apps on your phone...it makes me livid. I don't want to become that girl.

Do you have a smart phone? What are the pros of being connected all the time? If you don't have one, what's stopping you from getting one? Comment below!
